Oh my! It's been forever since I have posted. I seriously need to get caught up! Let's start with my most recent newborn shoot this past weekend. No matter how hard mom and I tried, this little dude was not going to go to sleep. We tried feeding and feeding and feeding some more...and (with the exception of a 2 minute cat nap) nothing! That's okay, though. Despite the lack of sleep we got some beautiful shots showing off Jude's bright beautiful eyes!

In these shots you'll see some of my newest props. The basket is from a sweet, sweet client of mine, Amanda. And the amazing 80 year old barn door is from a very kind fellow, named Brian, who drove it hundreds of miles back home for me and I'm in love with it! The baby buggy is on loan for now...thanks to my newest friends, John & Carol! Enjoy!

Over the summer I sponsored Lazer 105.9's Baby Idol contest. Wow, I couldn't believe how catty adults could be over other people's babies and their own. Despite the drama, there was only one baby who could be the official winner of my photography collection, and that was 9 month old Brenna. I couldn't have asked for a nicer family (btw, they had nothing to do with the contest drama!). Her parents Michelle and Ben were so kind and helped out so much during the shoot. I really look forward to working with them again and photographing Brenna as she gets older...she is such a beautiful baby!

Why does it have to be so difficult to photograph my own son! Every time I try to take his picture in a studio setting it's always much more challenging than a regular shoot. He started out the session with saying, "I don't like pictures"...with a doleful voice and expression like it's going to be the end of the world if he takes good pictures for his mommy. Could this be pure irony that the photographer's son hates to take pictures or maybe it's just the fact that he's two. It's probably because he's two.

Once I started playing pretend and told him that I caught a big bug in my hand he came around and started to be a little more cooperative. While playing along with this game he kept walking over to the light stand saying, "I got one!" Then he'd go sit down and show me the bug that he found. It was pretty cute. He also enjoyed playing air guitar (with the Guitar Hero guitar which didn't actually make it into any real shots) and he enjoyed head banging in slow motion while making electric guitar noises. Enjoy the photos!

Last weekend I photographed Ellis Maxwell. How cute is he with all that hair?! Wow! Does he look so much like his Daddy! I originally had this shoot scheduled at 2 weeks from birth, but I had to move it back a week, making Ellis 3 weeks old. I cannot tell you how much one week makes such a difference! Ellis was MUCH more stronger on the day of the shoot than he was a week ago (and much less cooperative because of his strength and his ability to stay awake)! He was very squirmy; this is why I encourage my expecting mothers to schedule their newborn shoot within 2 weeks of birth. We tried so hard to get Ellis to sleep, but he just wouldn't have it. Once we got him asleep in the pail we tried on several hats and made the most of it!

Digital: A love-hate relationship

Remember the day when the only way you could see your pictures was after you took the film to the lab and got it developed? You took the film out of your 35mm camera, placed it in the infamous black canister, snapped on the gray lid, dropped it in the envelope and handed it to the creepy guy behind the counter. Then you patiently awaited for the day to see how your pictures came out. I want to go back to that day...it was a precious time in history that forced me to get real, tangible prints!

Then came digital. Don't get me wrong, I do love my *cough* Canon *cough* digital camera. I guess you could say it's a love-hate relationship. Today, we take so many pictures on our digital cameras, some meaningless, some priceless, and how often do we get them printed? ....hardly ever! My son just turned two and I hate to say it, but I am 2 years behind in making prints. I did manage to print the images from his photo sessions (newborn, 6 months, 1 year, and a few in between) but the pictures from birthday parties, Christmases, trips to the zoo, etc, somehow never get printed. I am starting with the album entitled "Kristian's 2nd birthday party", finding my favorites, uploading them to my online lab and I am going to PRINT them! Then work back through the last two years...I'll let you know how far I get. I challenge you to start printing your pictures instead of letting them eat up your hard drive!

So about 3 years ago I photographed Mike & Mindy on their wedding day and now I had the pleasure of photographing their little girl, Jaylynn! How awesome! I'm always trying to find new locations for my sessions and I've had my eye on a little apple orchard just outside of Lawrence for quite some time. I finally asked the owner if I could photograph there for an upcoming shoot. After some convincing, he agreed, but only for the one shoot. Now I am tasked with a new mission...to find another orchard where I can shoot freely!

Jen & Joe | Engaged

My friends Jen and Joe are getting married this weekend! They decided at the last minute they needed some engagement pictures, so this past Sunday I photographed them in downtown Lawrence, KS. My favorite location is the one with the glass behind them. We were taking photos on the staircase when we thought, why don't we go checkout the rooftop. Little did we know it was someone's patio where they let their dog do his business...everywhere! So as I was taking Jen and Joe's romantical pictures, I was dodging dog shi#! Any-who, can't wait for the wedding this Saturday! Should be a blast!

I had so much fun with Lydia, who just turned 6 months old, and Emily, who just turned 4 years old. Emily was such a good listener throughout the whole shoot, but she kept insisting that I had a ladybug in my camera. :) Lydia was pretty serious during most of the shoot, but with the help of Emily we got a few smiles out of her. This past month, Will has finally turned one! We had a lot of fun during his shoot last weekend and I think he had fun too! I have captured Will at each milestone in his first year. Starting all the way back with the maternity session, then the newborn session, 6 month session, 9 month session, and now 1 year! It has been so fun seeing him grow up!

After being in the hospital for a week after delivery, Aubry was finally able to come home! And you can tell by the photos how happy daddy is to have her in his arms. Just like most newborn babies, she didn't like being naked, but after we cranked up the space heater and fed her she fell right asleep. All throughout the session I kept trying to put her arm underneath her cheek while she was sleeping and she refused almost every time. Watch out daddy, she might be somewhat stubborn when she grows up. ;)

Josiah & Alainie

In the majority of my newborn sessions there is almost always an 'accident'. Baby is usually in the nude for most of the session and the parents usually get the brunt of this 'accident'. However, for the first time I was the one that got peed on! I was positioning Josiah in the hammock when all of the sudden I see liquid come straight at me! With one hand under baby, I held my other hand (the one with the camera) far away from Josiah's aim. The dad quickly grabbed the camera and I quickly grabbed a burp cloth to block the stream. I guess you have to take one for the team every once in awhile!

Brecken | Newborn Photographer

Brecken might look like a sleeping angel in the shot below, but trust me it wasn't easy! Brecken's parents and myself worked very hard to get him in this peaceful state. He could eat all day if his mom would let him! One of my favorite shots is the one with the suitcases. The suitcase that he is happily posing in is his great grandmother's and the one underneath him belongs to my grandmother. Whenever possible, I like to use props that have some type of story to them. Whether they are a family heirloom, or a hand-knitted cocoon, like the green one below made by his grandma, it helps create a more meaningful photograph.

Sam & Luke's Wedding

I was so honored to be a part of Sam & Luke's wedding last week. With only the immediate family present, the wedding had such an intimate feel. Everyone was able to laugh together, cry together and do the Soulja Boy-inspired Superman dance together...well, only Luke. :) There is no doubt that this couple is truly in love and what a loving family they have to support them. I really enjoyed being a part of this wedding. Congrats you two!

Riley

Riley sure was a handful, but considering that he is just about to turn 4 I wouldn't expect anything less. I chose Circle S Ranch (www.circlesranch.com) in Lawrence, Kansas as the location for Riley's pictures because I knew that there would be plenty there to keep him busy! (And there sure was!) He enjoyed playing on the swing, mooing at the cows and sitting in the bed of an old Ford truck. Thank you Circle S Ranch for letting me use your beautiful location! I look forward to shooting there again!

The Schlicht Family

A few weeks ago I photographed the Schlicht family for Christmas. We found an amazing location for the shoot in Lee's Summit, Missouri called The Stanley Historic Event space (www.thestanleyeventspace.com). The space has a loft feel to it, with wood floors, brick and large windows. It's a perfect place for a wedding reception, bridal shower, or in our case, family Christmas pictures. Thanks to the owners for letting us take pictures in their beautiful space!

Family of Five

This was the first time that Danielle & Joey have had professional family portraits taken since their newest addition to the family. They both warned me that photographing their family of five wasn't going to be easy. When you think about taking pictures of a 2 month old, a 2 year old and a 6 year old, you probably think it would be a nightmare, but that wasn't the case at all! At times, the girls needed their space, so I took them away from the group and had little mini shoots with them. They loved that, especially Shaleigh. She liked the idea of hiding from mom and dad! Although the girls had their ups and downs we managed to get some great shots!

This past Saturday I photographed Caden & Carson. They both were so photogenic. Caden actually started posing on his own for me once he warmed up a bit in the field. Carson took a little longer to warm up to the camera, but once he did he sure showed off his beautiful blue eyes! Scott & Ellen's Wedding

I think this was the hottest wedding I have ever photographed! It had to have been over 100 degrees that day! As most of you probably know, the Overland Park Arboretum is a beautiful place for a wedding. I have photographed families and seniors at there, but this was my first wedding there. Congratulations Scott & Ellen!

For those of you who don't know me, my name is Emmalee and I have been taking photos ever since I discovered my mom's 35mm camera back in high school. Photography has always been a love of mine, along with graphic design and, well, anything that relates to art.

This year marks my 4 year anniversary of being in business for myself, it also marks the birth of my son, Kristian. Kristian was born May 27th. He is such a bundle of joy and is taking quite well to the camera. :)

I look forward to sharing my thoughts and photos with you!
